Common questions
Self-defence training FAQs
Clear information about choosing a programme, applying, training safely and knowing what to expect.
Which option should I choose?
Choose private lessons if you want a defined ten-hour course, direct instructor attention or flexible appointments. Apply for weekly training if you want regular practice, group training and continued progression.
Do I need previous martial arts experience?
No. Complete beginners may enquire or apply. Previous experience can be useful, but it is not a joining requirement.
Is this martial arts or combat-sport training?
No. The training is organised for practical self-defence rather than competition, forms, points, rounds or belt progression.
Why are military-derived methods mentioned?
The Todd Group systems have a European military close-combat and military self-defence lineage. On this site, relevant methods are taught for practical personal protection rather than military occupational tasks.
Where is training held?
Training is conducted at Todd Group headquarters, 49 Stuart Street, Dunedin. Attendance is by confirmed arrangement rather than casual walk-in.
How much do private lessons cost?
The current ten-hour private course is $500 for individual tuition, $250 each for two people, or $200 each for a group of three or four. Fees are paid after acceptance and joining approval.
What does weekly training cost?
Current induction, membership and training details are provided to accepted applicants because entry arrangements can differ by intake.
How fit do I need to be?
Applicants do not need to be athletes. Relevant health conditions, injuries or physical limitations must be disclosed so suitability and safe participation can be considered.
Is contact involved?
Physical self-defence training necessarily includes managed contact. Intensity is controlled and introduced progressively under instructor supervision.
Are applicants automatically accepted?
No. The School reserves the right to train only suitable and responsible applicants. Submission of a form begins the review process but does not confirm a place.
Can people under 17 train?
Age suitability is assessed before acceptance. A parent or legal guardian must be involved for an applicant under 17, and any attendance conditions will be confirmed directly.
Can someone watch a private lesson?
Observers are not normally permitted. A parent or legal guardian may attend where required for an approved participant under 17.
Does the training guarantee I will be safe?
No training can guarantee an outcome in an uncontrolled event. The purpose is to improve recognition, decision-making, practical capability and preparation.
Does the site provide legal advice?
No. Legal information is general context only. Participants remain responsible for their decisions and should obtain qualified legal advice where needed.
